How does an Accordion Work?

 

Close your eyes and imagine someone playing the accordion. If the first image that comes to mind is an old man in a beret playing a nice folk song next to a French bar, you're probably not alone. But for classical musician Ksenija Sidorova, it's a good thing.

"It's a cliché that classical actors try to get away from, but I think it's a big part of our history and it shows that connection in every direction," he says. - says the latest episode of Classic FM's video series, Discover Instruments. "It's a tool that speaks to a lot of people."

What is the History of the Accordion?

"It was first licensed in Vienna, in 1829, only as a left wing," says Ksenija. “The right hand held it, and the right hand followed the songs. Since then the accordion has become a large box with many different sounds and keyboards. “It became a popular tool in the second half of the 20th century, especially after the Second World War, when people took this tool into the forest after fighting. It was their grief, it was their joy, and it became a musical instrument that people played from parties to funerals to weddings.

But in the second half of the 20th century, everything changed for the accordion. Many additions have been made to the instrument - including a large new version of four and a half octaves of the same note - creating a complete polyphonic instrument in two manuals.

Now, it is one of the best instruments for writing, appearing in many jazz and classical music, as well as folk.

How Does an Accordion Work?

An accordion has three main parts: the right side, the piano or the buttons; bell, which makes an arc; and the left side, which has 120 buttons. To create sound, says Ksenija, the basic movement is "drag and click."
